In recent months, QR code fraud at parking machines in Austria has increased significantly. The so-called “quishing” is particularly deceitful. Criminals manipulate QR codes on parking machines, for example, and use them to lure unsuspecting drivers to fake payment pages.

“Do not scan any codes”
The real QR codes are covered with almost identical stickers. Anyone who scans the code ends up on a fake website where sensitive data, such as credit card numbers, are then entered.

Following an increase in cases of fraud, the police and AK are now warning against this brazen scam. “Criminals are exploiting the increasing popularity of QR codes to obtain sensitive data. So don’t scan any stuck-on QR codes!” recommends AK consumer protection officer Franz Valandro. You should only use official apps from trustworthy providers to make payments.
