Foot-and-mouth disease: Minister Totschnig warns of increased risk at Easter. Vigilance and hygiene are crucial to prevent the spread of the disease.
Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is raging on Austria’s doorstep, and the domestic agricultural sector is enormously afraid it could spread. Although there is no known domestic case of the disease, the situation threatens to worsen.
In an interview with the APA, Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP) warned of an increased risk of the disease spreading at Easter. “Especially around Easter, the risk of introducing foot-and-mouth disease increases,” said Totschnig.
Return trips from affected countries, increased travel activity due to vacations, and Easter markets with products of unknown origin could contribute to the spread of the disease.
The Minister of Agriculture, therefore, appealed for people to be particularly vigilant, strictly adhere to hygiene regulations, and not bring any fresh meat, raw milk, or animal feed from affected regions to Austria.
“Anyone who travels to affected regions and comes into contact with animals can inadvertently contribute to the spread of foot-and-mouth disease,” warned Totschnig.
