Palm Sunday: sun in the east, rain showers in the south
While it will be very mild in eastern Austria on Palm Sunday, with temperatures between 20 and 24 degrees, the west and south will be increasingly cloudy. Rain showers will be during the day, especially in East Tyrol and Carinthia. In contrast, the country’s eastern half will remain friendly and noticeably warmer.
Start of Holy Week: changeable weather with regional differences
At the start of the week, the weather will vary greatly depending on the region. In Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Carinthia and parts of Salzburg, there will be some clouds and rain in places. However, it will be mostly sunny in the other parts of the country – the southerly foehn will ensure friendly weather and temperatures of up to 25 degrees, especially in the southeast and lowlands.
Midweek: lots of rain in the south, snow in the mountains
From the middle of the week, precipitation will increase in the south. It rains more frequently and sometimes heavily in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia, especially in the so-called southern accumulations where the moist air builds up. In the high mountains, a large amount of fresh snow falls in places – not unusual for this time of year.
Good Friday: Cold front brings rain and cooling
Towards the end of Holy Week, there are signs of a change in the weather. A cold front is expected to move across Austria on Good Friday. This front will bring strong westerly winds and widespread rain, causing temperatures to drop noticeably.
Easter weekend: No clear forecast yet
It is not yet clear what the weather will be like at Easter. It looks like a high-pressure system will prevail again, which could lead to friendlier weather. At the same time, further areas of low pressure are on the way over Italy and France (countries in southern Europe), which could once again influence the weather in Austria. However, as things stand today, another cold snap is not expected.
