Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni announced this on Monday. The date was set during a general congregation of cardinals at the Vatican, the first since Pope Francis’s funeral on Saturday.
Bruni reported that over 180 cardinals, including around 100 papal electors, took part in the fifth general congregation. The names of the three cardinals who will support the Camerlengo, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, at the conclave were drawn by lot: German Cardinal Reinhard Marx, Filipino Luis Antonio Tagle, and Frenchman Dominique Mamberti. On Monday, Bruni reported that the cardinals discussed the challenges facing the new pope and the universal Church.
No decision on the case of Cardinal Becciu
The Italian Cardinal Angelo Becciu, who fell out of favor with the late Pope Francis due to a financial scandal, wants to participate in the conclave for the election of the new pontiff. Although the case was discussed at the General Congregation, Bruni announced that no decision was made in this regard.
One hundred thirty-five cardinals, all of whom are under 80 years old and come from all over the world, are entitled to take part in the conclave and decide who should become the next head of the 1.4 billion-member Catholic Church. The last two conclaves, which took place in 2005 and 2013, only lasted around two days each.
