For some, a morning shower is an essential ritual that gets the body and mind going. For others, warm water in the evening is the perfect end to a long day – relaxing, cleansing and sleep-inducing. But who is right? Microbiologist Primrose Freestone from the University of Leicester has looked into this everyday question, and her findings finally provide some answers.
Pro evening shower
Shower in the morning or the evening: Which is better?

A lot accumulates on our skin and hair during the day: Sweat, sebum, dust, pollen, and much of it we take to bed with us unnoticed. According to Freestone, these particles end up directly on the bed linen, despite being transferred from our clothing. So if you shower in the evening, you bring less of these “souvenirs” with you under the covers.
Plus point: warm water in the evening calms the body, lowers the circulation and promotes sleep. The ideal relaxation kick after a long day, especially after sport or physical work.

But the night is not a clean place either: We sweat, regardless of the room temperature. And this is exactly what microbes live on our skin and multiply overnight. Showering in the morning not only removes these uninvited guests but also dead skin cells and transferred germs from the bed linen.
Another advantage: if you sweat a lot at night, you run the risk of getting small pimples – a morning shower is much better for this. A cool morning shower also acts like an espresso for the skin, refreshing, activating, and waking you up.
Shower twice – twice as good?
You might think that showering in the morning and evening solves the problem. However, be cautious: dermatologists advise against excessive use of soap and hot water. This damages the skin’s natural protective acid mantle. As a result, the beneficial skin bacteria struggle to prevail against odour-causing germs. This creates a vicious circle: you smell faster and therefore shower even more often.
The best time: it depends
There is no clear right or wrong – it all depends on your everyday life and personal needs. If you spend a lot of time outdoors during the day, work physically or are prone to allergies to dust and pollen, showering in the evening is a good idea. On the other hand, anyone who sweats a lot at night or finds it difficult to get going in the morning will benefit more from a refreshing morning shower
