You’ve probably done it countless times—hung your wet towel in the bathroom and then completely forgotten about it.
But this habit can turn out to be a real bacteria bomb.
According to experts, moisture and poor air circulation create ideal conditions for mold and bacteria to settle in the fibers. As a result, your towels start to smell unpleasant and feel stiff like cardboard.
If you wash them while they are still damp and have been hanging in a humid environment for a long time, there is a risk that the bacteria will spread in your washing machine – and, in the worst case, to the rest of your clothes.
Laundry expert Zachary Pozniak explains that it is particularly unfavorable to throw a damp towel directly into the laundry basket.
“Mold, fungi, and bacteria find an ideal environment to multiply there,” he tells Express.
The solution is simple: make sure your towels dry completely in a dry room before washing them.
If you can’t wash them immediately, hang them up somewhere else – not in the damp bathroom.
It may sound simple, but it can make all the difference between wrapping yourself in something soft and fresh after your shower or something musty and hard.
