On June 11, 2025, at 16 Hours, the Philippine Austrian Cultural Society (PACES), under the leadership of President Dr. Jane Abaya, will host a floral offering ceremony at the Vienna City Hall Garden in Austria. The event marks a significant occasion to celebrate the strong and enduring ties between the Philippines and Austria. Now in its seventh year, the ceremony is held in collaboration with the Philippine Embassy in Vienna, honoring the two Catalpa (Trompetenbaum) trees planted in June 1998 during the centennial of Philippine independence. These trees, located on the east side of the Rathaus park, were planted by the City of Vienna as a tribute to the contributions of Filipinos, especially nurses, to Austrian society.
Over the years, what began as a quiet and informal observance has evolved into a formal annual celebration. The event has grown to attract notable members of the Filipino community, embassy officials, media, and Viennese dignitaries. It serves not only as a moment of reflection on the shared history between the two nations but also as recognition of the enduring legacy of Filipino migrants in Austria.
The catalpa trees stand as living symbols of friendship, cultural solidarity, and mutual respect. Each year, the ceremony deepens the sense of community among Filipino-Austrians and reinforces their connection to both their heritage and their contributions to their adopted country. As the event continues to grow, it remains a meaningful reminder of how cultural ties can flourish across generations and borders.
