While the LP.8.1 variant currently dominates, the next one is already on its way: NB.1.8.1 “Nimbus.” What symptoms to expect.

Currently, the Omicron derivative LP.8.1 dominates coronavirus infections in Austria, but also in Asia and throughout Europe. But it’s not the only one. Another is already on the rise: NB.1.8.1, also known as “Nimbus.” Like LP.8.1, ‘Nimbus’ has been classified as a “variant under monitoring” by the World Health Organization (WHO). In Austria, “Nimbus” was first detected in wastewater in November 2024.

According to the latest findings, however, the course of the disease is likely to be mild, even though the variant can evade the antibody response built up by vaccination or infection (“immune escape”).

According to the World Health Network, two symptoms are particularly dominant in the “Nimbus” variant: so-called “razor-blade throat fatigue,” i.e., a mixture of “razor-blade-like” sore throat and severe exhaustion.

It is currently assumed that the vaccines currently available are effective against severe disease caused by “Nimbus.”

The COVID-19 vaccination recommendation in Austria continues to be aimed at people who are at risk of severe disease progression. This includes people aged 60 and over and people, regardless of age, with certain pre-existing conditions, as well as pregnant women and healthcare workers.
