For the first time in several years, Vienna is no longer at the top of the ranking of the world’s most livable cities. After three consecutive top rankings, the Austrian capital has been replaced by the Danish capital, Copenhagen. Vienna has the same score as the Swiss metropolis of Zurich, followed by Melbourne in Australia and Geneva in Switzerland, in the ranking of the British “Economist” group.
In the 2025 Global Liveability Index, compiled by the Economist Group’s research and analysis department, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the list continues with Sydney (Australia), Osaka (Japan), Auckland (New Zealand), Adelaide (Australia), and Vancouver (Canada).
Vienna lost a few points, particularly in the area of safety. In 2024, Vienna still received the highest score of 100 points for stability, but by 2025, it had dropped to 95. This was due to two thwarted terrorist attacks: one on the planned Taylor Swift concert and another on the Westbahnhof train station, as the Economist writes.
Copenhagen achieved top marks
According to The Economist, Copenhagen achieved a top score of 100 points in the areas of stability, education, and infrastructure, moving up from second place. The EIU index evaluates 173 cities worldwide based on 30 indicators in various categories, including healthcare, culture, and the environment. The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, is ranked 165th, followed by Damascus (Syria), Tripoli (Libya), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Karachi (Pakistan), and Algiers (Algeria).
