Heat alert: June 2025 breaks records again, becoming the hottest month in Western Europe since records began.
According to the EU Earth observation program Copernicus, last month was the hottest June in Western Europe since measurements began. Worldwide, June 2025 was the third warmest June, trailing only June 2024 and coming close to the heat of June 2023. This means that record average temperatures have been measured for the third consecutive year. In Europe, which is warming twice as fast as the global average, particularly “extreme” temperatures were measured.
Hottest June ever recorded in Western Europe
June was marked by two consecutive “exceptional” heat waves—from June 17 to 22 and from June 30 onwards—explained Samantha Burgess, climatologist at Copernicus. She expects such heat waves to “occur more frequently and intensely, affecting more and more people in Europe.”
Temperatures rose above 40 degrees Celsius several times in various countries, reaching a high of 46 degrees in Spain and Portugal. According to Copernicus, June 30 was “one of the hottest summer days ever recorded on the continent.”
