July will be among the four rainiest Julys in the 168-year record period – “it may even be the third wettest” month, according to Alexander Orlik, climatologist at Geosphere Austria, on Monday in response to a query from the APA. In addition, preliminary data show that “significantly too little sunshine” has been recorded so far. About a quarter of the normal value is missing.
July 2025: 50 percent more precipitation than in an average July
According to Geosphere’s forecast, rain is still expected in the last days of July, especially on Tuesday from Vorarlberg to western Lower Austria. The month has already been “very wet,” with 50 percent more precipitation than in an average July, Orlik explained. He spoke of a “balance to the six very dry months before.” It will probably be the wettest July since 2012. The exact evaluation will only be available after the end of the month.
Temperatures in July this year were around 1.5 degrees warmer than the climate average for the years 1961 to 1990, which was not yet so strongly affected by climate change, Orlik reported. However, compared to the period from 1991 to 2020, the values are “roughly balanced,” and this July will be “similarly cool” to 2020 or 2014, said the climatologist. June 2025, on the other hand, was the third warmest and second sunniest in Austrian measurement history.
