Several omicron cases in the artistic groups and the associated high number of K1 people has forced the cancellation of all performances of the Vienna State Opera up to and including January 5. The first performance affected is Fledermaus, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today, Jan. 1, the State Opera informed. “We will do everything we can to resume performances on January 6,” emphasized State Opera Director Bogdan Rošcic.
“The State Opera has been struggling with Corona for almost two years, and so far, when there has not been a lockdown, it has not canceled a single performance,” Rošcic said. That path has become increasingly difficult in recent weeks, he said. More than 85 percent of the opera’s staff is triple-vaccinated, according to Rošcic, who also PCR-tests at least three times a week. “But the working conditions, especially among the artistic groups, playing, singing, dancing, making music together, make complete protection impossible,” the director said.
Under the signs of Omicron, the speed and intensity of infection events have increased dramatically, he said. The goal is to be able to play again from January 6 through this interruption of the performance and a further tightening of security measures, emphasized Rošcic, who apologized to all affected visitors for the inconvenience. “The tickets will of course be refunded,” he said in a statement.
