Charging your cell phone at night? Convenient, but risky. Connecting your smartphone to the charging cable next to your bed can be dangerous.

Almost everyone does it—and risks more than they realize. Checking WhatsApp in the evening, scrolling through Instagram, and then plugging your cell phone into the outlet right next to your bed?

Convenient, yes—but also dangerous. And not just because of the radiation. When charging, the battery gets hot – and that can quickly become dangerous.

“No device should be charged under such circumstances because heat can build up. This can lead to critical situations, even fire,” warns Jürgen Ripperger from the Association for Electrical Engineering (VDE) in Techbook.

Many cell phones switch off automatically when they get too hot, but then they don’t reach their full charging capacity. If you charge your phone incorrectly over a long period of time, you risk damage—or worse.

Even the New York Police Department is sounding the alarm on social media: if you put your smartphone under a pillow or blanket, the increased heat can have serious consequences. Pictures of burned or charred cell phones in beds impressively illustrate how dangerous this behaviour can be—a warning that all smartphone users should take seriously.

“It is always necessary to clarify exactly what the causes were,” emphasizes Ripperberger. It can be assumed that in such cases, the cell phone was not appropriately handled overall.

From a technical point of view, it is also worth switching off your smartphone at night. After all, smartphones are small computers whose operating systems and apps can become sluggish over time without a restart. A daily restart prevents many potential problems and also ensures that essential security updates are installed.

It also saves energy: a switched-off device does not consume any power overnight and conserves battery power. Fewer charging cycles mean a longer battery life for your phone.
