Real-time transfers, the end of Windows 10 updates, and much more: In October 2025, Austrian citizens can expect a number of changes. You can find an overview here.

In October 2025, several important changes will come into effect in Austria that will affect the everyday lives of citizens. These range from innovations in payment transactions to the end of support for Windows 10 and the switch to winter time. There is also a new feature at Finanz Online. You can find the details here.

New rules for bank transfers: What will soon change for all bank customers

New rules for bank transfers will soon come into force. Specifically, changes will apply to all bank customers from October 9, 2025, due to an EU regulation. On the one hand, real-time payments will become the standard. All banks within the eurozone will be required to offer this service. However, real-time transfers must not be more expensive than other transfers. The aim is to achieve a maximum processing time of 10 seconds.

Measures against fraudsters: Additional security check

In addition, stricter security measures will apply in the future: Before each transfer, banks will check whether the specified recipient name matches the IBAN. This should make fraud attempts significantly more difficult. Previously, the IBAN alone was sufficient as an identifier, allowing fraudsters to divert payments to third-party accounts by entering the name of a legitimate recipient. With the new name and IBAN comparison, this method will be prevented in the future.

There will also be no more updates for Windows 10 from mid-October. The computer professionals at the repair network provide answers to the most important questions about the end of the operating system. The fact that there will be no updates for Windows 10 from October 14, 2025, is a problem primarily because there will also be no more security updates. “Simply continuing to use Windows 10 as before is not a good idea because it can create major security vulnerabilities,” explain the repair network companies Computerzentrum Palluch, Höbarth-EDV, and TechLine in unison. You can find all the important information here: End of Windows 10: What does this mean for users?

Changes to the FinanzOnline platform

FinanzOnline is also set to undergo a change on October 1, 2025. The platform, which millions of Austrians use to file their tax returns every year, will then require two-factor authentication. Users have been able to use two-factor authentication voluntarily since February 2025, and from October it will be mandatory in order to use the platform. When logging in, the access data will be entered and the user’s identity will be verified in a second confirmation step. You can find all the information here: From October: Changes to the FinanzOnline platform. In the future, the aim is to make the platform “as easy to use as possible and as secure as necessary,” explained Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer at a press conference. Various login options are planned, including ID Austria.

Time change 2025: Clocks will be turned back again in October

In October, Austria will also switch back to winter time. On the night of Saturday, October 25, to Sunday, October 26, the clocks will be set back from 3 a.m. to 2 a.m. This will give us an extra hour of sleep. There have been discussions about the time change for years. Read more here: Time change 2025: When will the clocks be turned back again?
