The police have issued a warning. In Vienna, criminals are increasingly posing as employees of MA31 (Vienna Water) in order to gain access to apartments where they can then commit thefts.
The procedure always follows a similar pattern. The fraudsters say either in person or in advance by telephone that they have discovered alleged water damage or a defect in the house that needs to be repaired.
Ask to see their ID card
As soon as the fraudsters gain access to the apartment, they try to distract their victims while another perpetrator steals jewelry and cash. The Vienna State Criminal Investigation Office is investigating.
Due to the danger, the police urgently warn against letting anyone into the apartment without first showing them an ID card from the Vienna City Council. If in doubt, you should ask for the telephone number of the relevant department and ask whether employees are currently working in the area of the apartment.
