Readers of the British luxury travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller voted Vienna the friendliest city in Europe. This was announced by Vienna Tourism on Tuesday. And Vienna’s charm even scores well in the magazine’s global ranking. The Austrian capital comes in second place behind the Ecuadorian capital, Quito.
A total of more than 180,000 responses were received in the poll. Among other things, respondents were asked which destinations they would visit again. In the “Friendliest Cities” category, Vienna came out on top in the European ranking among British respondents. Florence, San Sebastian, Reykjavik, and Lisbon followed in second, third, and fourth place.
In the global friendliness ranking, Vienna secured second place behind Quito and ahead of Cape Town. Tourism director Norbert Kettner was delighted with the “compliment” from visitors. He concluded that Viennese grumpiness, combined with robust charm, was clearly well received.
Kettner says, “Viennese grumpiness captivates with its robust charm, and that goes down well: Condé Nast Traveller readers have voted and describe Vienna as a green city full of friendly faces that give you a warm welcome.” Ultimately, the surroundings also play a major role. “The perfect combination of Baroque architecture and coffee house culture is also reflected in the Viennese personality. A charming compliment from our visitors, which we are very happy about,” says Kettner.
