A massive step for WhatsApp users: The messenger app is planning a significant update. In the future, phone numbers could become obsolete.

WhatsApp is facing a radical change! The popular messenger app is planning a mega update that will completely change the registration and usage process. Cell phone numbers will soon be obsolete. Instead, individual user names will be introduced—more data protection, more anonymity, and more control for all users, as has been suggested.

WhatsApp is breaking with a decades-long tradition. Until now, the cell phone number has been at the heart of the registration process. Without it, nothing worked. Soon, that will change! In the future, app users will be able to register with their own username, similar to Telegram.

The beta version for iOS already shows how it works. Names can be reserved, and lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores are allowed. Users can also set a password or PIN if they wish. This keeps their data secure.

There is a clear plan behind the change: greater data protection for users. Phone numbers are considered highly sensitive data. In the future, everyone will apparently be able to decide for themselves who can see their number and who cannot. This is particularly useful for professionals, influencers, or people who want to remain anonymous in chats.

Experts see the change as a significant step forward: “The introduction of usernames gives users significantly more control over their data. WhatsApp is responding to the desire for more privacy,” explains an IT security expert.

In the current iOS beta version, the first users can apparently secure their names. First-come, first-served. This allows you to secure your desired name before it is taken.

The beta version already allows users to log in with a username and password. The combination of name, PIN, and password ensures that accounts remain better protected.

There is no official launch date for Android yet. WhatsApp is apparently planning a staggered rollout. So anyone with an Android device will have to be patient for a little longer. But one thing is clear: as soon as the feature is released, millions of users will have to switch over.

With usernames instead of cell phone numbers, WhatsApp and its use are changing fundamentally. The changes could also be a strategic move for WhatsApp itself. Telegram and other messengers are known for their flexible login methods. WhatsApp is now catching up—and could win new users who previously valued number protection and anonymity.

The community is excited. Many welcome the innovation enthusiastically. Others may be confused at first because they are used to the old number method. WhatsApp is rolling out the feature cautiously to ensure a smooth transition.

One thing is sure: The WhatsApp revolution is a hot topic of conversation! And it shows that messengers are changing – and we will all soon be chatting differently than we are used to!
