A stormy cold front will bring snow to higher elevations, rain to the south, and strong winds starting on Thursday—especially in the mountains. Slush is also expected on several mountain passes.

A cold front will move across Austria from the west on Thursday afternoon, bringing winter weather to the mountains. Stormy winds and heavy rain are also expected. “In addition, it will snow on some mountain passes for the first time this fall,” said meteorologist Simon Hölzl in Wednesday’s Geosphere forecast.

Stormy cold front brings winter weather to the mountains

On many mountains, westerly to northwesterly winds will reach speeds of over 100 km/h at times, with gusts of between 60 and 80 km/h expected elsewhere. The expected rain showers may be accompanied by isolated thunder and lightning. The heaviest rainfall is forecast for southern Austria, with around 30 to 50 liters per square meter—it may be slightly more in the Carnic Alps and Karawanken regions.

With the cold front, the snow line will drop rapidly to around 1,600 to 1,400 meters above sea level, then to around 1,000 meters. “Snow or slush is to be expected on Thursday evening and during the night leading into Friday, for example on the Timmelsjoch, Kühtaisattel, Hahntennjoch, Arlberg, and Gerlos passes, and possibly also in the Felbertauern portal area,” warned Hölzl.

Still very windy in places on Friday

The cold front will have moved away by Friday, but Austria will remain in a strong westerly flow and there will still be strong to stormy winds, especially in the north and east and on many mountains. There will be a mix of sun and clouds, with intermittent rain, especially on the north side of the Alps. The wind will be significantly weaker everywhere over the weekend. However, the weather will remain changeable with sun, clouds, and isolated showers. Maximum temperatures on Saturday will be between 10 and 16 degrees Celsius, and on Sunday between 7 and 14 degrees Celsius.
