The number of foreign-born residents in Austria has risen slightly. According to the new brochure “Bundesländer” (Federal States) published by the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF), 22.7 percent of the total population, or 2.085 million people, were born abroad as of January 1, 2025. In the previous year, the figures were 22.3 percent and 2.038 million. Germans represent the largest immigrant group, both overall and in 2024.
Around 270,500 people in Austria were born in Germany. This is followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina (179,800), Turkey (166,800), and Romania (148,600) as countries of origin. Syria (94,800) and Afghanistan (48,200), countries from which there have been refugee movements in the recent past, are in seventh and twelfth place; Ukraine, which is at war with Russia, is in eighth place (88,700).

Austrians emigrated more frequently than one
Germany remained the number one country of origin in 2024—according to the ÖIF, almost 19,400 immigrants from the neighboring country were recorded. A total of around 178,600 people immigrated to Austria last year. Eighty-five thousand one hundred came from EU and EFTA countries and the UK, 79,900 from third countries, and the rest were Austrians. Meanwhile, 128,500 people emigrated abroad. Austrian citizens, on the other hand, emigrated more often than they immigrated, with a negative balance of 5,700 people.
39.8 percent of migrants live in Vienna, and people born abroad also made up 40.9 percent of the population in the capital at the beginning of 2025. At the other end of the ranking is Burgenland, with only 2.0 percent of migrants living in Austria’s easternmost province.

In the 2023/24 school year, 26.4 percent of pupils had a first language other than German. By comparison, in the previous school year, 2022/23, the figure was slightly higher at 27.0 percent, but ten years ago it was significantly lower at 21.3 percent.
