Vienna, Austria — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), led by Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac, met with Austrian Minister Wolfgang Harttsmanndorfer of the Ministry of Economy, Energy, and Tourism to further enhance bilateral labor cooperation and open new employment opportunities for Filipino workers in Austria.
During the meeting, both officials reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthen and broaden Philippine–Austrian labor relations, building on the 2023 bilateral agreements on the recruitment of professional and skilled workers, including nurses.
Minister Harttsmanndorfer expressed Austria’s strong interest in expanding its recruitment of Filipino workers beyond the healthcare sector. He also conveyed Austria’s readiness to work closely with the DMW in developing new employment pathways in caregiving, tourism, and hospitality, under a special hiring arrangement that ensures ethical recruitment and worker protection.
Secretary Cacdac welcomed the development, noting that Austria’s continuing confidence in Filipino workers reflects their professionalism, reliability, and global competitiveness.
Joining Secretary Cacdac during the meeting were Philippine Ambassador to Austria Evangelina Lourdes Bernas, DFA Undersecretary Leo Herrera-Lim, OWWA Administrator PY Caunan, and DMW Undersecretary J. Rasul, Jr.
Currently, approximately 8,000 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) reside in Austria, with over 700 new deployments recorded in the past two years.
