The travel booking platform Omio has used global weather data to list the Christmas markets in Europe where snow is most likely to fall. So if you’re looking for a white Christmas, you don’t have to travel all the way to the North Pole – some of Europe’s most charming cities offer you the chance to celebrate in the snow. In Austria in particular, you can look forward to snow-covered Christmas markets and festively decorated old towns.

Snow guaranteed in Finland

If you’re looking for a winter wonderland, Finland should be at the top of your travel list. That’s because snow is almost guaranteed here! Rovaniemi, the home of Santa Claus, takes first place. With freezing temperatures of -8.5°C in December, the city is transformed into a paradise for snow lovers. Visitors strolling through the Christmas market can look forward to festively decorated streets, handmade gifts, and even the mesmerizing Northern Lights.

In Helsinki (2nd place) and Turku (3rd place), there is also a very good chance that Christmas snow will cover the ground in time for the festivities.

White Christmas in Austria

Austria has three cities in the top 10 of Europe’s most snow-sure cities. Innsbruck ranks 5th, and anyone visiting the Christmas market in the old town can be sure that the snow will transform the colorful stalls and the Golden Roof into a true winter wonderland.

Graz, in 6th place, is also a hot contender for a white Christmas. The Christmas market around Graz’s main square and the Schlossberg offer a festive atmosphere that is made even more beautiful by the cold winter air and the expected snowfall.

Salzburg, in 8th place, also scores highly with a high probability of snowfall and enchants visitors with its famous Christmas market on Cathedral Square. If you’ve always wanted to experience the historic old town of Salzburg in a winter atmosphere, this is your best chance to stroll through the alleys under a snow flurry.

Snowfall is also almost guaranteed in Poland and Germany

In addition to the charming Austrian cities, many other places in Europe offer Christmas market visitors the prospect of snow-white holidays. In Krakow (4th place), snow is almost as sure as the city’s breathtaking architecture. In Wroclaw (10th place) and Gdansk (16th place), snow is also highly likely, transforming the markets into a winter wonderland.
