Inflation and the state of healthcare are currently the most pressing worries for people in Austria. This emerges from a representative Ipsos survey, published Wednesday as part of the global “What Worries the World” study. The findings reveal that eight out of ten respondents believe Austria is heading in the wrong economic direction. Immigration and crime also remain significant sources of concern.

Rising Anxiety Over Inflation and Healthcare

Compared with the previous survey in April, fears of inflation have risen to 40 per cent (up seven points), while worries about the healthcare system have climbed to 40 percent (up ten points). Long waiting times for medical appointments and fears of an overstretched system weigh particularly heavily on older citizens and those not in employment.

Immigration concerns, though slightly reduced, remain high at 34 percent (down two points). Crime and violence continue to trouble many, with 27 per cent citing them as major issues (down one point).

Economic Strains and Social Issues

Austria’s economic outlook is increasingly shaping public sentiment. Poverty and social inequality now worry 25 percent of respondents (up four points), while unemployment concerns have edged up to 15 percent.

Interestingly, climate change, once a major issue, has slipped down the list: only 12 percent of Austrians cited it as a concern in November. By contrast, the fear of higher taxes (14 percent) has gained more relevance.

A Nation Skeptical About the Future

Overall, Austrians are markedly more pessimistic than the global average. While 79 percent believe the country is on the wrong track (up from 74 percent in April), the international average across the 30 surveyed nations is 61 percent. Scepticism is especially pronounced in Styria, where 87 per cent share this view.
