On December 24, Vienna’s shops are traditionally still bustling with activity as many people rush to buy last-minute gifts, food, or decorations. Christmas Eve falls on a Wednesday this year, and although it is not a public holiday, special rules apply to opening hours.
Shortened opening hours in shops on Christmas Eve
To ensure that everyone can be home with their families in time for Christmas Eve, many shops have shortened opening hours. The majority of retailers in Vienna and throughout Austria open early in the morning on December 24, but usually close their doors in the early afternoon. It is therefore worth planning your last-minute shopping in the morning, as supermarkets, drugstores, and most specialty stores are only open until 1:00 p.m. Particularly popular businesses such as candy stores and flower shops are allowed to stay open until 6:00 p.m., and Christmas trees can be sold until 8:00 p.m. (here is an overview of all sales outlets).
Anyone who still has something to do at the post office on December 24 can do so in all branches from at least 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The exact opening hours of individual post offices can be found online.

On December 24, 2025, some Vienna supermarkets will open their doors earlier, but will close at 1:00 p.m. at the latest. As is often the case, branches at train stations and airports are exceptions.
