Vienna, 30 December 2025 – Today marks the 129th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. José Rizal, the Philippine national hero whose life, writings, and sacrifice ignited the Filipino struggle for freedom. Across the globe, Filipinos gather to honor his legacy—and the Philippine Embassy in Vienna joins the nation in this solemn and meaningful commemoration.

In a statement, the Embassy highlighted Rizal’s enduring influence on Philippine identity, democratic ideals, and the global Filipino community. “Rizal’s courage and intellect continue to inspire generations of Filipinos, including those who call Austria their second home,” the Embassy noted.

Rizal in Vienna: A Historic Visit Revisited

As part of today’s remembrance, the Embassy invites the public to revisit a lesser‑known but historically rich chapter of Rizal’s life—his visit to Vienna in 1887.

Fresh from the successful publication of Noli Me Tangere in Berlin earlier that year, Rizal traveled across Europe with his close friend Dr. Maximo Viola. Their journey brought them to Vienna, then a vibrant center of arts, science, and intellectual exchange. Here, Rizal immersed himself in the city’s cultural life, engaged with European thinkers, and continued to broaden the worldview that shaped his reformist vision for the Philippines.

To help the community rediscover this historic encounter, the Embassy encourages everyone to explore “Tracing Rizal’s Footsteps in Vienna,” a heritage walking tour that highlights the sites connected to his stay. The brochure offers historical notes, photographs, and mapped routes that bring Rizal’s Viennese experience to life.

A Legacy That Crosses Borders

Rizal’s ideals—education, dignity, justice, and national pride—continue to resonate deeply with Filipinos worldwide. For the Filipino community in Austria, remembering Rizal is not only an act of honoring the past but also a reaffirmation of shared identity and purpose.

As the world welcomes a new year, the Embassy calls on Filipinos in Vienna and beyond to carry forward Rizal’s spirit of enlightenment, compassion, and service to others.
