The new week will bring freezing temperatures, but it will be sunny in many places.
With the turn of the year comes winter: In the coming days, a cold snap will bring frost down to minus 20 degrees. Snowfall will remain local for the time being, but the sun will still shine often.
Vienna weather in detail
The first Geosphere forecast of the year promises a prolonged period of wintry weather. The coming days will see a steady cooling: maximum temperatures will initially drop from plus seven degrees to a maximum of zero degrees next Tuesday. Significant snowfall is only expected before the weekend, as the trend is towards sunny weather before precipitation returns, especially in the southeast.
Friday: Snow in the north, sun in the south
Friday will be sunny south of the main Alpine ridge and in southeastern Austria, but fog or high fog may persist in some valleys. Further north and east, there will be significantly more clouds throughout the day. Along the northern side of the Alps and generally from Upper Austria eastward to western Lower Austria, there will also be repeated snow showers, which will be persistent in the mountains. The wind from the west will be brisk at times in the north and east. In the morning, temperatures will range from minus twelve to plus one degree, with some areas in the inner Alps even colder. During the day, temperatures will rise to between minus one and plus seven degrees.
Saturday: Sunny at first, later snow from the southeast
Saturday will start off with widespread sunny weather. There will only be a few thicker clouds in Vorarlberg and the Tyrolean Oberland, with possible short snow showers. During the afternoon, thicker clouds will slowly move in from the southeast, which may bring further snow showers. The wind will come from the south to west and will be moderate to brisk, especially in the north and east. After early temperatures between minus thirteen and zero degrees, maximum temperatures of minus two to plus six degrees are expected.
Sunday: Lots of sun, but bitterly cold
Sunday will also offer plenty of sunshine, with cloud fields only in the north and southeast until mid-morning. At first, a few snowflakes are even possible in the southeast. The wind will be light to moderate, but brisk in the Danube valley around noon, blowing from the south to the northwest. In the morning, temperatures will range from minus seventeen degrees in the Alpine valleys to minus one degree in the eastern lowlands, and in the early afternoon from minus five to plus four degrees.
Frosty start to the new week with temperatures down to minus 20 degrees
Monday will also bring plenty of sunshine, but more and more clouds will move in along and south of the main Alpine ridge during the day, which may bring some snowfall in some areas in the evening. The wind will be light to moderate, blowing from the southeast to the west. Early temperatures will range between minus twenty and minus six degrees, with afternoon temperatures between minus eight and plus one degree.
The west will see dry and often sunny weather on Tuesday. In the rest of Austria, the sky will be mostly cloudy with brief breaks, and light snowfall is expected at times, with moderate snowfall in the southeast. The wind will be light to moderate, brisk at times on the eastern edge of the Alps, blowing from the northwest to the east. Low temperatures will range from minus sixteen to minus two degrees, and high temperatures will range from minus seven to zero degrees.
