The new week brings everything your heart desires: a warm front is moving across Austria from the west, bringing sunshine, mild temperatures, and rain. But snow and fog are also on the way, and Geosphere Austria is warning of black ice.
Light snow will fall in Vorarlberg and the Tyrolean Oberland in the early hours of the morning, spreading along the northern side of the Alps to the east as the day progresses.
With rising temperatures, freezing rain threatens on the still frozen roads, especially north of the main Alpine ridge. In the south, however, it will remain mostly dry and pleasant. Temperatures on Monday will range from minus 18 degrees in cold valleys to plus four degrees in the west.
Caution is still advised on Tuesday: black ice continues to lurk in the north and northeast, while the west and south are already enjoying the first rays of sunshine. Maximum temperatures will climb to between two and nine degrees.
On Wednesday, the weather will calm down somewhat: a temporary high-pressure system will bring fog and high fog to the lowlands, which will be particularly persistent in the Danube region and the east. Away from these areas, the sun will shine frequently. Temperatures will range between minus seven and plus ten degrees.
On Thursday, fog or high fog will initially persist in valleys and basins, particularly in Carinthia. In the Danube region, clouds will replace the fog, elsewhere there will be plenty of sunshine and hardly any clouds. It will remain mostly dry, with only the north seeing light rain or freezing temperatures in the morning. Temperatures will range between two and nine degrees during the day.
Caution: The changeable weather is causing slippery roads, icy patches, and slippery surfaces, so extra caution is advised.
