A crucial deadline is now looming for anyone planning to drive on Austria’s motorways in early February. Those who want their digital annual vignette to be valid from 1 February must complete their online purchase no later than Wednesday, 14 January.
Why the Rush?
Although the sea‑green 2025 vignette remains valid until 31 January 2026, drivers who continue without a valid replacement after that date risk hefty fines. The digital version, while convenient, comes with a catch that often surprises motorists: it does not become valid immediately.
Digital vs. Sticker: A Key Difference
The traditional red adhesive vignette is valid the moment it’s stuck onto the windshield. The digital vignette, however, activates only on the 18th day after purchase when bought online.
This delay is due to EU consumer protection rules. As ASFINAG explains:
Consumers have 14 days to withdraw from an online purchase. With an additional three days for potential postal processing, the digital 2‑month and annual vignettes become valid only from the 18th day after purchase.
Short-Term Vignettes Are Exempt
If you only need a 1‑day or 10‑day vignette, you can hit the road immediately. These short-term products are not subject to the 18‑day waiting period.
Want Instant Validity? There’s a Workaround
Drivers who don’t want to wait can buy the digital vignette in person, where the consumer protection delay does not apply. Immediate‑validity purchases are available at:
- ÖAMTC, ARBÖ, and ADAC service centers
- Many petrol stations and tobacconists
- ASFINAG toll stations
- Ticket machines at rest areas and border crossings
These options allow motorists to enjoy the convenience of the digital vignette without the activation delay.
