A short but intense return of winter has left Vienna and large parts of Austria under fresh snow, and the unsettled pattern is set to continue. Following Thursday’s wintry outbreak, forecasters expect further snowfall on Friday before the weather gradually transitions into a mix of rain, snow, and brief sunny spells over the coming days.

Friday: Persistent Clouds and Widespread Precipitation

Dense cloud cover dominates the sky on Friday, with widespread precipitation expected throughout the morning. Only the far south and northwest are likely to remain mostly dry. Eastern Austria faces the heaviest rain and snow, with persistent and at times intense precipitation continuing well into the evening.
In the west, conditions improve during the day, allowing for occasional sunny breaks. The snow line begins in low-lying areas but rises to between 400 and 800 meters as temperatures climb. Winds blow moderately to briskly from the northwest to north, reaching strong to stormy levels in the southeast and south. Morning temperatures range from –5°C to +4°C, with daytime highs between 2°C and 7°C.

Weekend Outlook: Gradual Improvement, but New Disturbance Approaches

Saturday: Sunshine in the West, Last Snow Showers in the East

The weekend begins with a split weather pattern. The eastern half of the country remains under thick clouds in the morning, with lingering snow showers. Western Austria, by contrast, enjoys mostly clear skies from early on.
By afternoon, conditions become widely dry, and sunshine becomes more frequent across the country. However, Vorarlberg will already see signs of the next approaching disturbance. The snow line varies between 300 and 800 meters. Temperatures start between –8°C and +5°C and rise to 5°C–14°C, with the warmest values in sunny western and southwestern regions.

Sunday: Clouds Dominate in the North and East

South of the main Alpine ridge, Sunday brings a mix of sunshine and thicker clouds. Further north and east, dense cloud cover prevails. Early showers linger in the eastern lowlands and along the eastern Alpine edge.
As the day progresses, new precipitation spreads from the west along the northern Alps toward Salzburg and Upper Austria. The snow line rises to between 800 and 1,200 meters. Winds blow moderately to briskly, and strongly at times along the eastern Alpine edge. Temperatures range from –5°C to +7°C in the morning and reach 4°C–11°C during the day.

Early Next Week: Continued Disturbances Keep Weather Unsettled

Monday: Widespread Rain and Snow

A new disturbance shapes Monday’s weather across the eastern Alps. The sky remains mostly overcast, with widespread rain and snow especially in the west and north. The snow line fluctuates between 400 and 900 meters. Eastern Austria sees only isolated showers. Winds pick up from the west to northwest, particularly in Upper Austria. Temperatures start between –5°C and +5°C and reach 3°C–11°C.

Tuesday: Cloudy with Limited Sunshine

Clouds continue to dominate on Tuesday, with the sun breaking through mainly in the south and later in the west. Rain and snow fall primarily along the northern Alps from Lake Constance to the Mostviertel, with occasional precipitation also in the north and east. The snow line lies between 500 and 800 meters. Winds blow moderately, becoming brisk in southern föhn valleys. Morning temperatures range from –4°C to +5°C, with highs again between 3°C and 11°C.
