Alex Eala is stepping onto one of the trickiest surfaces of her young career — and she knows it. Clay has never been her most comfortable terrain, with no tournament last year seeing her advance beyond the second round. But this time, she arrives with renewed confidence after a productive training stint at the Rafael Nadal Academy, where she hit alongside former world No. 1 and four‑time French Open champion Iga Świątek.

The 20‑year‑old Filipina, an alumna of the academy, is looking to reset her season after her ranking slipped from No. 29 to No. 45 following an early exit at the Miami Open, where she had reached the semifinals the previous year. April will be a demanding month for her, with back‑to‑back commitments at the WTA 500 events in Linz and Stuttgart, followed by the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid.

Eala opens her clay‑court campaign on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at 11 AM, facing world No. 87 Julia Grabher in the Round of 32. The Linz field is stacked, featuring top‑10 star Mirra Andreeva and defending champion Ekaterina Alexandrova, making Eala’s road considerably steep.

A win over Grabher would set up a second‑round showdown with 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Eala holds a 2–0 record against the Latvian, though both victories came on hard court and grass — a reminder that clay presents a very different challenge.

Should she push through to the third round and beyond, top seed Andreeva looms as a potential semifinal opponent. Still, given Eala’s impressive rise over the past 13 months, a breakthrough on clay is far from impossible.

Filipinos in Austria — especially those in Linz and across Upper Austria — have eagerly secured tickets to support her. The Philippine Tennis Club in Vienna has also pledged full backing, promising a strong presence at every match and hoping to cheer Eala all the way to the finals.
