Alex Eala is gearing up for her first clay‑court appearance of the season as she heads to Austria for her debut today, Tuesday at 18 Hours at the Linz Open. Fresh off her stint at the Miami Open, the Filipina rising star faces a challenging draw in her return to the European circuit.

Eala opens her campaign against Austria’s Julia Grabher, and a victory would set up a second‑round clash with 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Despite the tough road ahead, the 18‑year‑old enters the tournament with confidence, having displayed strong form throughout the early months of the year. Her growing fanbase is also expected to follow her in Linz, as she has consistently drawn large crowds at every WTA event she has joined this season.

Linz Open Tournament Director Sandra Reichel expressed her excitement about Eala’s participation, offering high praise for the young Filipina.

“You have an amazing player in the Philippines,” Reichel said in an interview with Filipina journalist and former player Dyan Castillejo. “Alexandra is unbelievable, and I think it’s great for the Philippines, for the people, for the tennis fans to have such an amazing player.”

Reichel added that Eala has already arrived in Linz, noting that the tournament is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. “We are a long‑standing member of the tour, and it’s always wonderful to welcome new players—especially those who represent the future of the sport. So it’s great to have Alexandra here in this special year.”

Eala enters her opening match as the clear favorite. Grabher has struggled to find momentum recently and has not won a WTA Tour‑level match since the Australian Open, where she defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the first round.

The Filipina’s preparations have been bolstered by her training at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca under Toni Nadal. During her stay, she also crossed paths with fellow academy alumna and four‑time French Open champion Iga Świątek.
