A major nationwide mobility initiative by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has officially launched. Beginning Wednesday, April 15, around 100,000 pensioners across Austria will receive two free long‑distance train tickets, valid for travel anywhere within the ÖBB network.
The offer applies to all seniors aged 65 and older who receive an Ausgleichszulage or Ergänzungszulage—supplementary benefits added to low pensions. Eligible passengers will receive the free tickets automatically when applying for or renewing the Vorteilscard Senior Frei, a special discount card that is also free for this group.
ÖBB first announced the initiative several weeks ago, highlighting its goal of improving mobility and social participation for low‑income seniors. The tickets are valid for long‑distance travel within Austria and can be used on Railjet, EuroCity, InterCity, or InterRegio services.
Who Qualifies for the Free ÖBB Tickets
- Pensioners aged 65 or older
- Recipients of an Ausgleichszulage or Ergänzungszulage
- Approximately 100,000 people are expected to benefit
What the Offer Includes
- Two free long‑distance tickets for travel within Austria
- Valid only on ÖBB-operated routes
- At least part of the journey must be on a long‑distance train (Railjet, EC, IC, IR)
How to Receive the Tickets
- Tickets are issued when applying for or renewing the Vorteilscard Senior Frei
- The Vorteilscard cannot be renewed before its expiration date
- The promotion runs from April 15, 2026, to April 15, 2027
- Tickets remain valid for one year from the date the Vorteilscard is issued
- Tickets are provided digitally, but can also be redeemed at ÖBB ticket counters; no customer account is required
With this initiative, ÖBB aims to ease financial burdens and encourage greater mobility for older Austrians who rely on supplementary pension benefits. The program is expected to run for a full year, giving eligible seniors ample time to claim and use their free travel opportunities.
