For many years, dementia was widely considered to be largely determined by age and genetics. However, a growing body of research now suggests that lifestyle choices—particularly diet—may also play a significant role in brain health as people age.

According to Alzheimer’s Research UK, many individuals remain unaware that their personal risk of developing dementia can be influenced, at least in part, by everyday habits. The organization warns that this lack of awareness is concerning, as seemingly small lifestyle decisions could have long-term effects on cognitive health.

Risk Not Fixed, Even With Family History

Even for those with a family history of dementia, the risk is not set in stone. Alzheimer’s Research UK emphasizes that while genetics do contribute to the likelihood of developing the condition, they do not act alone. Lifestyle factors—including diet, exercise, and overall health—remain important components in determining risk.

Mediterranean Diet Shows Promise

One dietary pattern gaining attention is the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, and fish. Studies cited by Alzheimer’s Research UK suggest that this way of eating may help lower the risk of dementia.

Particular focus has been placed on oily fish such as salmon and mackerel. These fish contain nutrients that experts believe may help protect brain cells from damage over time.

Why Oily Fish Matters

Tracy Parker, senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, explains: “Oily fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA.” She notes that these are essential fats the body cannot produce on its own and must therefore be obtained through food.

Health experts generally recommend consuming at least one portion of oily fish per week. For those who do not eat fish, plant-based alternatives such as flaxseeds, walnuts, soybeans, and leafy green vegetables can provide omega-3 fatty acids, though in different forms.

As research continues to evolve, experts agree that adopting a balanced and flavorful diet could be a simple yet powerful step toward maintaining brain health and potentially reducing the risk of dementia in later life.
