Vienna will prohibit clothing donation containers on public land starting 1 January 2027, city officials announced on Wednesday. Planning Councillor Ulli Sima and Environment Councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky (both SPÖ) said the decision follows a sharp rise in textile waste and persistent cleanliness problems around collection points.
According to the city, complaints have been mounting across numerous districts. Piles of discarded garments around the containers have become a familiar sight. Officials report that containers are frequently forced open, with usable items removed and the remaining textiles left scattered nearby.
City authorities had repeatedly urged operators to address the situation, but these efforts produced no lasting improvements. As a result, Vienna is now taking regulatory action to remove the containers from all public areas.
The ban does not apply to collection points located on private property. Private operators may continue to offer textile donation services, provided they manage the sites responsibly.
The city emphasized that the measure aims to improve cleanliness, reduce littering, and ensure that textile recycling remains efficient and safe for residents.
