Vienna, Austria — In her video message, Austrian Federal Minister for Labor, Social Affairs, Health Care and Consumer Protection Korinna Schumann paid tribute to Filipino nurses, honoring the batch of Filipino nursing professionals who arrived in Austria in April, May, and November 1976.
Minister Schumann expressed her gratitude for the dedication and lasting contributions of Filipino nurses to Austria’s healthcare and nursing system.
“Filipino nurses have been an indispensable part of the Austrian healthcare and nursing system for many decades,” Schumann said. “Day after day, they provide essential care for patients, residents, and families with professional competence, experience, and personal commitment.”
The minister highlighted the vital role migrant healthcare workers continue to play in Austria, emphasizing that the country’s healthcare system is strengthened by people from different nations who choose to live and work in Austria while taking on important responsibilities in society.
She stressed the importance of recognition, respect, and strong working conditions for healthcare professionals, noting that Austria must continue to ensure fair labor conditions, quality training opportunities, reliable structures, and supportive environments where nurses can grow professionally and personally.
“Those who care for others also need security, appreciation, and support,” Schumann stated. “Austria’s strong public healthcare and nursing system lives through the people who work within it.”
The minister also underscored the shared responsibility of strengthening the nursing profession and maintaining Austria as an attractive place to work and live for healthcare workers from around the world.
Closing her message, Schumann thanked Filipino nurses for their decades of service and praised not only their professional achievements but also the cultural richness and sense of community they have brought to Austrian society.
“You enrich Austria not only through your professional service, but also through your history, your culture, and your community,” she said. “I warmly congratulate you on this special anniversary and wish you a beautiful and dignified celebration.”
The anniversary celebration commemorates the pioneering Filipino nurses who arrived in Austria in 1976 and whose legacy continues to influence the country’s healthcare sector today.
