Austrian strawberries stand out for their low pesticide levels, sustainable cultivation, and exceptional freshness — making them some of the healthiest fruits of the season.

As the strawberry season begins across Austria, consumers can look forward to baskets filled with bright red, aromatic berries now arriving in supermarkets. And this year’s harvest brings particularly good news: Austrian-grown strawberries are not only fresher but also significantly cleaner than many imported varieties.

Fewer Pesticides, More Sustainability

According to GLOBAL 2000, years of cooperation between farmers and retailers have led to a dramatic reduction in chemical pesticide use. Agronomist Kurt Stockinger, who has worked with seven other experts in the organization’s Pesticide Reduction Program for more than two decades, highlights the progress:

“Austrian strawberries have top quality and are produced sustainably and climate‑friendly. Together with farmers and Billa, we are reducing chemical pesticides step by step — for a cleaner environment and healthier food,” Stockinger says.

One of the biggest challenges in strawberry cultivation has long been the powdery mildew fungus. In the past, farmers often relied on hormone‑active fungicides that posed risks not only to consumers but also to farm workers. Today, the strategy has shifted entirely.

Natural Protection Instead of Chemicals

Modern Austrian strawberry farms rely on:

  • Robust varieties — naturally resistant to disease
  • Strict hygiene and good ventilation in tunnels and greenhouses
  • Precise monitoring to detect early signs of fungal pressure
  • Beneficial insects such as predatory mites and ladybirds to control pests

This integrated approach drastically reduces the need for chemical sprays — a win for consumers and biodiversity alike.

Farmers Under Pressure — and Innovating

Austrian strawberry growers face rising production costs due to the climate crisis, energy prices, and higher wages. Yet they continue to compete internationally thanks to smart, forward‑looking strategies:

  • Renewable energy systems like solar power and heat pumps
  • Clever crop rotation to maintain healthy soils
  • Diverse cultivation sites across different altitudes for stable yields
  • Greenhouse, tunnel, and open‑field production to extend the season

In Lower Austria, a pilot project is even testing a UV‑light robot that destroys fungal spores — a glimpse into the future of sustainable farming.

Clean Results in Independent Testing

Regular inspections by GLOBAL 2000 show that Austrian strawberries consistently outperform imported berries when it comes to pesticide residues. More than 90 percent of all samples tested over the past 20 years met the program’s strict standards.

This benefits not only consumers but also pollinators, soil organisms, and the wider ecosystem.

A Long‑Term Partnership for Healthier Food

The Pesticide Reduction Program, run by GLOBAL 2000 in cooperation with Austrian farmers and the REWE Group, continues to push for cleaner, safer fruit and vegetables. The team monitors produce worldwide to ensure compliance with rigorous guidelines — and Austria’s strawberry sector has become a model of success.
