Austria is heading into its first significant heatwave of the year, with temperatures in Vienna and the country’s eastern regions expected to soar to up to 36°C this coming weekend. After a notably cool and rainy start to June, meteorologists from Geosphere Austria and UBIMET warn that the shift to extreme summer heat will be both rapid and intense.

A Cool June Gives Way to Sudden Heat

The first half of June was unusually chilly. According to UBIMET, average temperatures across Austria were around one degree below the long-term norm. Rainfall, on the other hand, was plentiful: regions such as Carinthia, East Tyrol, the Lungau, and the Upper Murtal had already reached their typical monthly precipitation totals by mid-June.

This cool pattern is now ending abruptly.

Day-by-Day Temperature Rise

  • Tuesday: Early summer warmth returns with 21–28°C.
  • Wednesday: Many areas cross the 30°C threshold for the first time this year. Geosphere Austria expects highs between 26 and 30°C, while UBIMET forecasts isolated peaks of 31°C.
  • Thursday: Hot air from Southwestern Europe settles in. Temperatures jump to 26–33°C, with Vorarlberg, Tyrol, and later the eastern lowlands heating up significantly.

Weekend Peak: Up to 36°C in Vienna

The heatwave is set to reach its maximum intensity on Saturday and Sunday. UBIMET predicts that Vienna and the eastern plains could hit 36°C, making them the hottest locations in the country. Many other regions will also exceed 30°C, marking the hottest days of 2026 so far.

Tropical Nights Likely in Vienna

The heat won’t relent after sunset. Meteorologists expect the first tropical nights of the year in Vienna and other urban areas — nights when temperatures do not fall below 20°C. These conditions can significantly increase heat stress, especially for vulnerable groups.

Thunderstorms Still a Threat

Despite the heat, the atmosphere remains unstable. Daily heat-driven thunderstorms are expected, particularly in the Alps and surrounding highlands. These storms may bring heavy rain, hail, and strong gusts, with UBIMET warning of localized severe weather over the weekend.

How Long Will the Heatwave Last?

Meteorologists are cautious. While a low-pressure system may approach at the start of next week, it is still unclear whether it will bring lasting relief or only a brief cooldown.
