Vienna is preparing for a rare celestial spectacle: on 12 August 2026, Austria will witness its most dramatic partial solar eclipse since 1999. With 85 to 89 percent of the Sun covered, the event becomes even more striking because it unfolds just moments before sunset, giving the sky over the capital an unusually intense glow.
A Short but Stunning Viewing Window
The eclipse begins in Vienna at 19:22, reaches its maximum at 20:13, and the Sun sets at 20:14. That leaves about 45 minutes to observe the phenomenon. Clear views to the west and elevated vantage points are essential.
Top Viewing Spots and Events in Vienna
- Donauturm — Starting at 19:00, visitors receive free eclipse glasses. Views are possible from the outdoor terraces at 150 m, the Turm Café at 160 m, and the Turm Restaurant at 170 m.
- Planetarium Wien — On 10 August, the show “A Journey Through the Night – Solar Eclipse” simulates the eclipse inside the dome. Staff also provide viewing tips and distribute Solar Viewers.
- Urania — The official viewing event is already fully booked.
- Neue Donau — A free public viewing area is available on the left bank near Reichsbrücke/Copa Beach, where Solar Viewers will also be handed out.
🕶️ Eye Protection Is Mandatory
Authorities warn against looking at the Sun without proper protection. Regular sunglasses are not safe. Recommended options include:
- Solar eclipse glasses
- Solar Viewers
- Pinhole cameras for indirect viewing
Why This Eclipse Is Special
Because the eclipse aligns almost perfectly with sunset, the event is considered exceptionally rare. Vienna will see its next partial solar eclipse on 2 August 2027. A total solar eclipse visible from the city won’t occur until 3 September 2081.
