Vienna’s public transport operator, Wiener Linien, is introducing stricter rules for carrying e‑scooters on the network, limiting when and where the devices may be transported. The new policy, which aligns e‑scooters with existing bicycle regulations, takes effect on 1 September.
Limited Hours for E‑Scooter Transport
Under the updated rules, e‑scooters may only be taken on the Vienna U‑Bahn outside peak hours. The permitted times are:
- Monday to Friday: 09:00–15:00 and 18:30 until end of service
- Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays: All day
The restriction mirrors the long-standing bicycle policy and aims to reduce congestion during the busiest commuting periods.
Ban on E‑Scooters in Buses and Trams
A major change is the complete ban on e‑vehicles—including foldable e‑bikes and e‑scooters—on buses and trams. Only non-electric scooters, when folded, may still be carried at any time across all vehicles.
Fines for Violations
Passengers who ignore the new transport conditions face a 50‑euro penalty. This applies to anyone bringing an e‑scooter into a tram or taking a bicycle or e‑scooter into the U‑Bahn during restricted hours. Existing rules also remain in place: riding a scooter—electric or not—on the platform can result in fines.
Goal: Smoother Passenger Flow
Wiener Linien CEO Alexandra Reinagl said the decision responds to passenger feedback and internal studies. E‑scooters, she noted, “are often perceived as disruptive in heavily used vehicles and can hinder the flow of passengers during boarding and alighting.”
With nearly 2.5 million daily passengers, the operator hopes the new restrictions will improve comfort and ensure smoother movement inside Vienna’s “Öffis.”
