VIENNA, Austria — The Philippines and Austria marked the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic relations with a Eucharistic celebration on October 17, 2026, at the historic St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, bringing together members of the diplomatic community and the Filipino community in Austria in a spirit of thanksgiving and friendship.

The celebration was organized at the invitation of the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of the Philippines to the international organizations in Vienna. It highlighted eight decades of diplomatic ties between the two nations, built on mutual respect, cooperation, and enduring people-to-people connections.

The Holy Mass was presided over by Bishop Franz Scharl of the Archdiocese of Vienna and concelebrated by Filipino priests serving under the Archdiocese. Their participation reflected the important role of the Filipino Catholic community in the religious and cultural life of Austria.

Held in one of Vienna’s most iconic religious landmarks, the Eucharistic celebration offered an opportunity for participants to give thanks for the longstanding friendship between the Philippines and Austria and to pray for the continued strengthening of their bilateral relations.

Beyond diplomatic and economic cooperation, the anniversary also underscored the importance of cultural exchange, faith, and the contributions of Filipinos who have made Austria their home. Through their work in various sectors, involvement in community life, and participation in religious and cultural activities, Filipinos continue to serve as a living bridge between the two countries.

Following the Mass, a simple reception was held at the Bishop’s Residence beside St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The gathering provided an opportunity for guests to exchange greetings, renew friendships, and celebrate the milestone in a warm and cordial atmosphere.

The 80th anniversary serves as a reminder that the relationship between the Philippines and Austria extends beyond official diplomatic engagements. It is sustained by the people of both nations, whose shared experiences, mutual understanding, and commitment to cooperation continue to strengthen the bonds between Southeast Asia and Central Europe.

As the two countries celebrate eight decades of diplomatic relations in 2026, the commemorative Eucharistic celebration offered a meaningful expression of gratitude for the past and hope for an even stronger partnership in the years ahead.
