Austria is waking up to a decidedly autumnal day on Thursday, with rain, thick cloud cover and noticeably cooler temperatures greeting residents across much of the country. After the mild conditions of recent days, the abrupt change is set to make for a damp and chilly start.
Rain is expected in many regions throughout the morning, while grey skies dominate the weather picture. Commuters heading out early are advised to pack both a warm jacket and an umbrella as temperatures remain well below recent levels.
Sunshine Returns Later in the Day
Despite the gloomy start, conditions are expected to improve as the day progresses. Rain will gradually ease in many areas, and the cloud cover is forecast to break up, allowing periods of sunshine to emerge during the afternoon.
However, temperatures will remain on the cool side, with highs generally reaching only 13C to 14C in many parts of the country. Fresh to brisk winds could also make it feel even cooler at times.
A Brighter Friday Ahead
Weather conditions are set to become more pleasant again on Friday. Much of Austria can expect a sunny start to the day, although patches of fog may linger in valleys and low-lying basins during the morning.
Clouds will begin to move in from the west later in the day, but most regions are expected to stay dry until the evening. Daytime temperatures will range between 11C and 16C.
The morning will be particularly cold, with temperatures dropping to between minus 2C and plus 5C in some areas, bringing the risk of local frost and providing a stark reminder that winter is drawing closer.
