Austria’s unusually mild autumn looks set to continue into November, with long-range forecasts indicating temperatures may remain above average. At the same time, weather models suggest a greater likelihood of increased rainfall, potentially offering relief after weeks of dry conditions.
According to long-term calculations from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), November could be warmer than the climate average. However, meteorologists caution that seasonal outlooks indicate possible trends rather than reliable forecasts for individual days.
More Rain Expected in November
The most notable change could come in the form of increased precipitation. Analysis by weather service Tauernwetter shows that around 65% of model simulations point to a wetter-than-normal November across Austria. Meanwhile, 57% of projections indicate above-average temperatures for the month.
The prospect of more rainfall could prove significant following an exceptionally dry start to autumn. Data from GeoSphere Austria showed that nationwide temperatures in September were 2.1 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 climate average. During the same period, precipitation was 29% below normal.
The lack of rainfall has contributed to low water levels in rivers and lakes and has also affected groundwater reserves in several regions.
October Also Marked by Dry Conditions
Dry weather has persisted through much of October, particularly in eastern and southern Austria, where rainfall totals have remained well below seasonal norms. In contrast, parts of western Austria have already experienced more substantial precipitation.
Whether November’s forecast rainfall will be enough to significantly improve conditions remains uncertain. Experts note that widespread and sustained rainfall would be needed to replenish soil moisture and groundwater levels, while isolated weather systems may have only a limited impact.
Mild Weather Does Not Rule Out Cold Snaps
Despite expectations of a warmer-than-average month, colder periods remain possible. November can still bring outbreaks of cold air, overnight frost and even the first snowfall at lower elevations.
In the Alpine regions, winter conditions can occur at any time during the month, regardless of broader temperature trends.
For now, long-range forecasts offer cautious optimism for increased rainfall while maintaining the outlook for another relatively mild month. Meteorologists emphasize that upcoming forecasts will provide a clearer picture of how weather patterns develop as November approaches.
