The source of infection is unclear in the majority of corona cases: Only in 40 percent is this certain, as the current epidemiological clarification of the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) shows.
Accordingly, in the last week of October (calendar week 43 – October 25 to 31) reported infections could be determined in 39.6 percent of cases, how it came to the infection. The week before, the percentage of cleared cases was well over 50 percent.

Success of contact tracing
Contact tracing was even more successful in the last week of September, although the number of infections was admittedly much lower. At that time, the proportion of cleared cases was 65.5 percent. Daniela Schmid, senior epidemiologist at the Agency for Food Safety (AGES), had told APA more than a year ago that ideally at least 60 to 70 percent of all corona infections should be traceable to their source.

Fewer corona infections with asymptomatic course
Infections associated with an asymptomatic course are also declining. While their proportion was 29 percent in the last week of September, it dropped to 21.5 percent in the last week of October. This is probably due to the delta variant, which leads to asymptomatic courses less frequently than its predecessors.

Coronavirus passed on in the household
In 70.9 percent, and thus in the majority of the most recently clarified cases, transmission of the virus occurred in households. Recreational and educational settings also played a weighty role, accounting for 9.3 percent and 9.2 percent, respectively. 3.5 percent of infections occurred at work, and 2.2 in the health-social sector. 1.9 percent were travel-related, and another 1.9 percent were attributable to the hotel and catering industry. Sports, commerce and culture each accounted for 0.2 percent of infections.
