Despite Omicron Wave: Willingness to be vaccinated decreases

About two-thirds of covid patients currently admitted to normal wards are not fully immunized, and four out of five critically ill patients in intensive care units do not have adequate protection. These data show that booster vaccinations work well against coronavirus – yet vaccination coverage in Austria is declining. In the last seven days, 205,552 stings were given against Corona – nearly 20 percent fewer than the week before.

According to the Ministry of Health, 46,651 Corona vaccinations were recorded in Austria on Tuesday, of which 5127 were first stings and 15,444 were second stings, while 26,080 people had a third vaccination. By comparison, the previous Tuesday (Dec. 28), more than 53,000 vaccine doses were administered to protect against the building Omikcron wave, of which exactly 30,699 were third stings.

Vaccination rate decreased due to expired certificates
After the vaccination certificates of persons who had been immunized exclusively with a Johnson & Johnson vaccine basically lost their validity as of January 3, 70.3 percent of the total population currently holds a valid vaccination certificate. The vaccination rate has thus officially fallen slightly.

Above the Austrian average are Burgenland (76 percent), Lower Austria (72.3 percent) and Styria (70.4 percent). Significantly lower are Upper Austria (66.1 percent), Carinthia (67.1 percent) and Vorarlberg and Salzburg (67.3 percent each). Tyrol holds at 69.1 percent and Vienna at 69.2 percent.

Some districts well below average
Among the districts, there are striking outliers to the bottom: The district of Braunau in Upper Austria brings up the rear with a vaccination coverage rate below 60 percent (59.5 percent). Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia (around 61.8 percent), Hallein in Salzburg (63 percent) and the second-largest Upper Austrian city of Wels (63.8 percent) also need to catch up.

At the other end of the scale are Oberpullendorf in Burgenland with a vaccination rate of 78.8 percent, followed by the Lower Austrian districts of Mistelbach (78.6 percent) and Mödling (78.2 percent).
