The number of people seriously ill with Covid-19 in Israel is at the highest level since the beginning of the pandemic two years ago. The Ministry of Health said 1263 sick patients were being treated in hospitals. On Saturday, 1229 seriously ill people had already been reported. The previous peak had been reached a little over a year ago with around 1185 seriously ill patients.
Africa to set up own continental health organization
In response to the pandemic, Africa wants to establish its own continental health organization with wide-ranging powers. The heads of state and government of the African Union (AU) approved a draft to this effect this weekend at their summit in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.
Australia to reopen borders for tourists
Australia plans to reopen its borders to international tourists soon. As announced by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the reopening is not far away and could be possible before Easter. Morrison plans to discuss the issue in Parliament next week. Interior Minister Karen Andrews also said in a TV interview that the government is very close to a decision to open the border.
Ten more corona cases at Beijing Winter Games
Ten more participants have tested positive for the corona virus at the Beijing Winter Olympics. According to the organizers, those infected, including six athletes or team members, were discovered among more than 72,000 Corona tests conducted the day before. That brings the total number of Corona cases at the Winter Games to 363 since Jan. 23.
More than 133,000 new infections in Germany
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports 133,173 positive tests within 24 hours. That’s 14,203 more cases than a week ago Sunday, when 118,970 new infections were reported. The nationwide seven-day incidence rises to a new high of 1400.8 compared to 1388.0 the previous day. Forty-one people died in connection with the virus. This brings the total number of reported deaths to 118,717. In total, more than 11 million Corona tests have been positive in Germany so far.
