The Viennese Easter markets had to be canceled in the past two years due to the pandemic. This year, however, they will be held again at four locations. The 2-G rule will only apply in catering areas unless the infection worsens drastically.
The Altwiedner Ostermarkt on the Freyung, the Ostermarkt am Hof and the Kalvarienberg fest open their doors on 1.4. The Schönbrunn Palace Easter Market is open from 2.4 to Easter Monday on 18.4. Margarete Gumbrecht, chairwoman of the trade section in the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, said: “It is our custom. We decorate an Easter bush, we decorate our home in an Easter way, and that’s where the Viennese Easter markets are the ideal meeting point and, above all, the ideal place to shop.”
Restrictions due to coronavirus are unlikely.
After two years of interruption, the Vienna Easter markets open again. Should the pandemic worsen drastically, he said the federal government could decide on access restrictions again. “Only at the moment it doesn’t look like it will,” said Alexander Hengl, media spokesman for the Vienna markets.
The last time the Vienna Easter markets could take place before the pandemic was in 2019
Easter markets have to comply with the applicable protection measures. In addition, the needs had to submit hygiene concepts. “At the moment, it is the case with casual markets that where food and drinks are taken, the 2-G check has to be made,” Hengl said. Therefore, guests here must prove that they have been vaccinated or have recovered. Otherwise, there are no restrictions due to the coronavirus.
In addition to the four official markets, there are also smaller stalls on Franz-Jonas-Platz in Floridsdorf.
63 exhibitors have already registered at the market in Schönbrunn. Here, in the sunniest area of the Ehrenhof, a comprehensive children’s program will be organized, such as flower arrangement making or merry-go-rounds. There will also be an initiative for refugee children from Ukraine. “We will relaunch a fundraising campaign for the Easter Market and, if possible, invite Ukrainian children to the Eastern Market,” Schmiedle explained.
