From yesterday to today, 27 new deaths related to Covid-19 were registered in Austria.
Corona numbers are climbing to unprecedented highs: almost 50,000 new infections were registered from Wednesday to Thursday – the day before, it was nearly 48,000. The traffic light commission reacts by again putting all federal states at the highest risk. Also, the reintroduction of appropriate protective measures is demanded without making concrete proposals.
Epidemiologist Eva Schernhammer warned that the healthcare system would very well be pushed to its breaking point with such high infection rates. So far, the government has defended the opening steps with the argument that Omikron does not lead to an overload of intensive care units despite high infection numbers.
From Thursday to Friday, 49,323 new infections were recorded. That is above the average of 37,628 over the past seven days.
Currently, 358,629 people in Austria are actively infected with the coronavirus. The seven-day incidence is 2,959.13. In the past 24 hours, 435,083 new PCR tests were performed. This results in a positive rate of 11.34 percent.
Twenty-seven additional coronavirus-related deaths in 24 hours have been reported. Thus, there have already been 15,163 deaths since the pandemic began.
There are currently 2,751 people in the hospital, up 83 from Thursday. One hundred seventy-six people are being cared for in intensive care units, down by three from Thursday.
