A new study from Israel shows that taking aspirin could reduce the risk of infection with Corona.

Aspirin is a universally known painkiller, best known for its fever-reducing effects. But in addition to colds and cardiovascular disease, the drug could also be effective against Corona infection.

Israeli researchers wanted to find out if aspirin could help fight COVID-19. Their study suggests that taking aspirin could reduce the corona risk. The study was published in the “FEBS Journal.”

Aspirin as corona prevention?

The study authors from Bar-Ilan University hypothesized that daily intake of low-dose aspirin (75 mg) might have a “positive effect on COVID-19 susceptibility and disease duration.” To test their theory, the researchers analyzed data from 10,477 people tested for COVID-19 in Israel between February and June 2020.

The study results showed that generally healthy patients taking the drug had a 29 percent lower risk of COVID-19 infection than non-aspirin users.

The study results also show that patients who tested positive for COVID-19 and took aspirin relapsed faster.

In addition, they tested negative for Corona earlier than COVID-19 patients who were not taking the drug.

Aspirin users recovered two to three days faster than other coronavirus patients.

“This observation of the possible beneficial effect of low doses of aspirin on COVID-19 infection, while preliminary, appears to be very promising,” study leader Prof. Eli Magen of Barzilai Medical Center said in a university news release.

The study authors stress that the link between aspirin and COVID-19 requires further research, mainly using a more extensive and more diverse population sample.
