Corona infection numbers are currently dropping, and Austria and all of Europe are more concerned with the novel monkeypox than the coronavirus. After more than two years of the pandemic, the situation seems to have calmed down a bit for the time being. Virologist Dorothee von Laer does not see any significant dangers coming this summer.
Up to 3,000 new cases a day is registered in Austria, many times more than in previous years. In the summer, Von Laer also expects higher infection figures, but an interview with the “Kronen Zeitung” states that “we can tolerate this.“ Once again, the decisive factor is the utilization of hospital beds.
In 2020 and 2021, according to von Laer, they would have slept through the summer and not acted in time. “In the last two years, we’ve seen what the trend was in the fall. We have to prepare for that. I don’t understand why there are no incentives and actions to get risk groups to vaccinate,” the virologist criticized.
Von Laer would now like to see severe proposals for solutions from politicians, but instead, they would rather get bogged down in a debate about a possible compulsory vaccination. According to the virologist, such a debate would be the “last bastion.“ With a view to South Africa, where the omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 are already dominant, the 63-year-old assumes that this will soon also be the case in Austria. Von Laer said that the virus would “definitely be with us for a longer time.”
The virologist likewise answered why some have so far been spared by the virus. The genes are responsible for this: „just as there is blond and brown hair, we also have particular innate defenses.” However, this would not provide complete security: “Anyone can become infected,” says the virologist.
