New Corona vaccines adapted from Omicron variants are expected in autumn. Promising data are available from Moderna, and contacts are also being made with Biontech.
German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) is confident that perfect adapted vaccines will be available in the fall.
Since it is not foreseeable when there will be a vaccine that includes the Omicron variants, people who are not yet sufficiently protected should rely “as soon as possible” on primary immunization with the currently available vaccines, said a spokesman for Austria’s Health Minister Johannes Rauch.
Moderna presented promising data on the Omicron vaccine
The company Moderna had presented preliminary data on the efficacy of its adapted Corona vaccine on Wednesday. “mRNA-1273.21,” as the booster is called, is a combination of Moderna’s original Spikevax vaccine and a candidate vaccine tailored explicitly to the Omicron variant. In a total of 437 subjects in the clinical trial who received the new preparation as a second booster, scientists found significantly more neutralizing antibodies after one month than after booster vaccination with the conventional practice, particularly against the Omicron variant. They said the vaccine was well-tolerated, and side effects were equivalent to those after the traditional booster.
Hopes for booster availability in late summer
The company will submit the available data to regulatory authorities in the coming weeks. It is hoped that the booster will be available in late summer.
