The Premier League match between Aston Villa and Crystal Palace was overshadowed by a racist scandal.

In the English Premier League, the match between Aston Villa and Crystal Palace was preceded by a racism scandal. Palace star Wilfried Zaha was the victim of several racist insults and shared them with his fans on his Twitter channel. “I woke up with this today,” the Ivorian international wrote in his mail.

His club was dismayed by the incident: “Shame, this must not happen. We’re with you, Wilf.” Opponent Aston Villa also sided with the attacked Zaha. “We condemn the disgusting racist messages sent to Wilfried Zaha.” The Birmingham club also claimed they would ban the assailant from the stadium for life.

After the final whistle the West Midlands police announced that the first investigations have already begun and that they have already found the culprit. The police have already arrested a 12-year-old fan of Aston Villa.

Crystal Palace coach Roy Hodgson had previously strongly condemned the insults to “Sky Sports”. “He will be held accountable for these things, for which there is no excuse,” said Hodgson.

“It’s very sad that a player wakes up on the day of a match with such a cowardly and heinous insult,” the former England coach added, backing his protégé for making the incident public.
